Explain the difference between analog and digital measuring instruments?

Friends, today in this article we will learn about the difference between analog and digital measuring instruments. I am going to give information about all these in a very good way. So let’s start.

Comparison of digital and analog instruments-

  1. In digital instruments, the output is obtained directly in numbers, but in analog instruments the output is obtained in the form of electrical pulses. The possibility of observation errors, such as parallax, approximation, etc., which occur in analog instruments, is not there in digital instruments.
  2. Generally, the accuracy of analog instruments is ±0.1 (fsd). Accuracy can also be increased by determining the position of the decimal point in digital instruments.
  3. The resolution capacity of analog instruments is equal to one hundredth part, whereas in digital instruments it can be increased to one thousandth part.
  4. Relatively high power is required to operate analog instruments. Digital instruments do not have mechanical parts, hence less power is required for their operation.
  5. The input impedance of analog instruments is in the k2 range. These instruments receive relatively high signal from the test circuit, i.e., loading effect is generated due to them. Whereas, in digital instruments, the input impedance is in the MQ range and hence there is no loading effect.
  6. There is no suspension and mechanical adjustment in digital instruments. Their weight is also less. Hence, they can be easily carried from one place to another.
  7. Digital instruments are more affected by the environment because the semiconductor devices used in these instruments are sensitive to temperature and humidity etc.
  8. The structure of digital instruments is complex. A relatively more experienced and trained person is required for their maintenance.
  9. Most digital instruments are DC instruments. And usually we can measure upto 100V and 1000V with the help of input attenuator. Rectifiers are used for AC measurement.
