Describe transparent barrier and absorber materials related to solar cells.

Friends, today in this article we will learn  about the description of transparent barrier and absorbent materials related to solar cells. I am going to give information about all this in a very good way. So let’s start.

Three types of substances are used in solar energy-

  1. Transparent material
  2. Insulating material
  3. Absorbing material

Transparent Materials

Transparent materials are those that allow the solar rays to pass through them and reflect some amount. These materials also reduce the loss due to velocity in the air, as compared to soft metals. These mainly come in glass and plastic.

(a) Glass- Pure glass is made by heating silica at high temperature. Sodium carbonate and lime are used to further improve the properties of glass.

(b) Plastic- Plastic is a high polymer which is obtained by polymerization of organic compounds. On the basis of properties, plastic is divided into two parts-

(i) Thermo plastic

(ii) Thermo setting plastic

Insulating Materials

In the field of solar energy, a large amount of insulator materials are needed to prevent heat loss. These should have the following properties-

(i) High dielectric strength

Flexibility

(iii) Heat resistant

(iv) Electric non-permeability

(v) Low temperature coefficient

(vi) High melting point

The main bad conductors are as follows:

(a) Glass Wool- Glass wool is a form of fibrous glass in which small and fine fibers are scattered in different directions. Its main properties are as follows-

(i) Glass fibres do not catch fire.

(ii) Chemically active.

(iii) Are not damaged by insects and moisture.

(iv) Thermal capacity is 0.038 W/MC.

(v) They are used in solar water heaters and solar refrigerators because they are not affected by low temperatures.

(b) Mica- This is found in the form of crystals by the combination of aluminium silicate and silicate of potash soda. Its main properties are as follows-

(i) It occurs in layer structure due to which it is easily separated.

(ii) Higher temperature limit is upto 500°C.

(iii) Resistivity at 10°C is 5 × 10-3 cm.

(iv) Dielectric strength is 30 kg watt/mm.

(v) It is used to store electrical energy obtained from solar energy.

(c) Thermocol – It is the trade name of polycrystalline. Its colour is attractive, natural snow white. It is light in weight. Its main properties are as follows-

(i) Density is 15 to 30 kg/m³.

(ii) The value of thermal conductivity is very low, 0.028 kcal × hour degree.

(iii) It is used as a packaging material.

Absorbing Materials-

To store heat from solar energy, materials are chosen which are good conductors or semi-conductors of heat. These materials absorb the solar rays, due to which their temperature increases. Mainly copper, aluminium, brass, steel etc. are used in these materials. Their surface is painted black with no shine, due to which their heat absorbing capacity increases to 80-90%.
