Describe the main methods of diesel power plant?

Friends, today in this article we will learn about the main systems of diesel power plant. I am going to give information about all these in a very good way. So let’s start.

Main components of diesel power plant and their functions

The diagram of a diesel plant is shown in the picture, in which the arrangement of a diesel engine and other auxiliary equipment is shown. The various systems of diesel plant and their functions are as follows-

  1. Fuel System – The fuel is collected from the fuel tank to the all day tank by a transfer pump after filtering it through a strainer or filter. After filling the full day tank, diesel from it is fired into the engine through the fuel pump and fuel injection pump.
  2. Air Injection System – The air required for compression in each cycle is sent through filters. With the help of air filters, dust and dirt particles present in the air do not enter the cylinders and we get absolutely pure air. Sometimes supercharges are also used to increase the air pressure. Filters should be cleaned from time to time otherwise they will get filled with dust and their efficiency will decrease. In winter season, this air is heated by the heat of the exhaust gases so that proper combustion can take place.
  3. Air Exhaust System – By this system, the polluted gases (flue gases and smoke) emitted by the engine are released out of the engine house. The exhaust system of the engine cylinder is connected to the exhaust pipe in which the pressure in the exhaust line is reduced with the help of a muffler so that the noise produced by the exhaust gases is reduced. If the gases released from the engine house are not removed, then these polluted gases will also pollute the pure air used in the air intake system, which will reduce the efficiency of the engine.
  4. Engine Cooling System – Due to combustion of the mixture of fuel and air in the engine cylinder, it becomes very hot, it is very important to dissipate this heat otherwise the cylinder liner, head valve, piston etc. will get damaged. Therefore, to keep the cylinder cool, cold water is continuously passed through the cylinder jacket. This water should be soft otherwise scaling may form in the cylinder jacket. The spread of cooling water is always kept in mind. For this purpose, provision of hot well is made in the surge tank. The temperature of water increases due to rotation in the cylinder jacket, hence a cooling tower is used to cool it again and the water is cooled again and used. This way the process continues.
  5. Lubrication System – Lubricating oil is drawn from the sump by a pump and first passed through a sieve and then a filter. Generally, the lubricating oil is hot when taken from the sump, if the oil is not hot then it is heated before filtering it through the filter so that its viscosity increases and it can be filtered easily. Thereafter, it is cooled in a heat exchanger before sending it to the engine.
  6. Starting System – Battery and compressed air etc. are required to start the engine. If the battery is in good condition and the pressure of compressed air is correct, then the cooling water is turned on and the engine is started as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  7. Electric Generating System – The engine and the generator are coupled, so when the engine starts, the generator coupled to it also starts rotating and starts producing electric power. Before connecting the generator to the bus bar, its voltage and speed are adjusted and then after synchronizing it, the circuit breaker is switched on. After synchronizing, the engine is given more capacity so that it can take the electric load.
