In this type of reactor, high quality uranium is used as fuel and water is used as coolant, moderator and reflector in this reactor just like PWR. In BWR, steam is produced in the reactor itself instead of a separate steam boiler.

Advantages

  1. Because water is boiled inside the reactor itself. Therefore, in this reactor, the pressure inside the reactor vessel is less as compared to PWR. Hence, the reactor vessel is lighter in weight as compared to PWR. As a result, the cost price of the reactor vessel is also less.
  2. This reactor does not require steam generator circulation pump and pressurizer.
  3. The surface metal temperature is less as compared to PWR.
  4. It is more stable than PWR and any other reactor. 4.
  5. The thermal efficiency of this reactor is much higher (30%) than PWR (20-22%).

Disadvantages

  1. When the demand for power suddenly increases, this reactor is unable to supply it completely because the value of the exit power at the turbine increases and the pressure in the reactor decreases and the specific volume increases. Steam bubbles expand inside the reactor and cause the reactor to shut down. Therefore, if not designed properly, the power factor for the reactor is negative. As a result, it is unable to produce that much power when the demand increases.
  2. The steam coming out of the reactor remains somewhat radioactive for about 15 minutes. Therefore, light protective covers are necessary for the turbine and piping.
  3. The power density of this reactor is about 50% (33.6 Kw/litre) of PWR, so the size of the reactor is larger than that of PWR.
  4. In this reactor, the fuel is more likely to burn because heating of water on the fuel surface is permissible.
