Friends, today in this article we will learn about the fuel inlet and fuel storage system in a diesel power plant. I am going to give information about all this in a very good way. So let’s start.
Fuel inlet and fuel storage system in a diesel power plant
Fuel oil is brought to the plant location by trucks, railway wagons and oil tankers. An unloading facility pours the oil into the main storage tank from where the oil is pumped into small service tanks called engine day tanks which store for about eight hours of operation. The viscosity of the oil is heated with hot water or steam to reduce the pumping power of the oil.

The fuel injection system is the heart of the diesel engine. The engines that drive the electric generators have low speed and the compression chamber promotes the mixing of fuel and air. The fuel injection system performs the following functions:
(a) Filters the fuel.
(b) Measures the correct amount of injected fuel (by meter).
(c) Saves time in the injection process.
(d) Regulates the fuel supply.
(e) Secures the atomization of the fuel oil.
(f) Distributes the atomized fuel accurately in the compression chamber.
The oil is atomized by a blast of air or by a pressure jet. Diesel engines have air blast fuel atomization where compressed air at about 70 bar is used to atomize and inject the fuel oil. Such air compressors require a storage tank which is expensive. In pressure jet atomization, fuel oil is forced to flow at a pressure of more than 100 bar through spray nozzles. This is known as solid injection, which is more common. Solid injection systems are of the following types.
(1) Common rail injection system
(ii) Separate pump injection system
(iii) Distributor system
