Structure of Current Transformer
Current transformers are constructed in two ways
- Wound type
- Bar type
Wound type Current Transformer
In a wound type transformer, the primary winding is wound more than once around the core. In a low voltage wound type current transformer, the secondary winding is wound on a Bakelite former. The heavy primary winding is wound directly on top of the secondary winding and suitable insulation is used between the two or the primary winding is wound completely separately and then taped with suitable insulating material and assembled with the secondary winding on the core.
The core of wound type transformer is made of nickel-iron alloy. Before installing secondary winding on the core, it is insulated with the help of end collars and circumferential wraps of pressboard. Such pressboards provide additional insulation and protection to the windings from damage due to sharp corners.
Bar Type Current Transformer
In this type of current transformer, the primary winding is a bar of suitable size. Bar type primary has insulation of bakelized paper tube or resin is directly moulded on the bar. In bar type transformer the core and secondary winding are identical.

The stampings used for lamination in current transformers should have a higher cross sectional area than normal transformers. Due to this the reluctance of interleaved corners remains as low as possible, hence the associated magnetic current is also low. The windings are placed very close to each other to reduce leakage reactance. The diameter of the tube in bar type transformers is kept large to avoid the corona effect.
Applications of Current Transformers
Current transformers are used in power plants, industries, grid stations, control rooms in industries to measure electric power and analyze the flow of current in the circuit and for security purposes.
