Explain thermal chemical based (municipal solid waste) power plant?

Friends, today in this article we will learn about the thermal chemical based (municipal solid waste) power plant. I am going to give information about all this in a very good way. So let’s start.

Thermal chemical based biomass power plant is shown in the picture. In this, energy is obtained as a result of direct combustion of biomass.

Biomass waste is used as a source by municipalities. In this process, waste is burnt. This process is called pyrolysis.

Pyrolysis (thermal disintegration)

When organic substances are heated in the absence of oxygen, they decompose chemically. This process is called thermal disintegration. Thermal disintegration usually requires a temperature of more than 730 degrees Celsius and pressure more than atmospheric pressure. Practically it is not possible to create a completely oxygen-free environment because all substances contain some amount of oxygen. Due to this, some oxidation also takes place. This process is suitable for the decomposition of plastic and rubber waste materials. In this process, biomass is decomposed into single carbon molecules (CH2 and CO2) and hydrogen is produced as a gas called “producer gas”.

The liquids are obtained at different temperatures which are too low to break the long chain of carbon molecules resulting in the production of tar, oil, methanol, acetone etc. Once all the volatile substances are extracted, biomass is obtained in residual form.

Types of Pyrolysis

The two main types of pyrolysis are as follows:

Fast Pyrolysis

In fast pyrolysis process, biomass waste is burnt at high temperature in the absence of oxygen. In fast pyrolysis, the temperature depends on the initial amount of biomass waste. By this process, 60-75% liquefied biofuel and 15-25% biochar is obtained. The biofuel produced by this process is used in turbines, engines and other areas.

Benefits of fast pyrolysis

The main advantages of fast pyrolysis are as follows:

(1) This process is economically economical.

(ii) Industrial and municipal waste is easily burnt by it.

(ii) Motor fuel is obtained as a secondary conversion by fast pyrolysis.

Flash Pyrolysis

This is an irreversible chemical change, in which heating takes place in the absence of oxygen. In the absence of oxygen or air, chemical bonds are broken by thermal energy and the energy stored in the biomass is released.
