Explain auto transformer and tell its advantages, disadvantages and applications?

Auto Transformer-

In an auto transformer (self transformer), only one coil is wound on the laminated core. Some part of this coil is common in the primary and secondary coils.

Its working principle is the same as that of a two coil transformer. Due to having one coil, copper is saved in this transformer. Continuously variable output voltage can be obtained through this. In this transformer, the primary and secondary coils are not electrically isolated. The auto transformer is shown with a circuit diagram in the figure.

Advantages of Auto Transformer

Disadvantages of auto transformer –

  1. Its biggest drawback is the direct electrical connection between its primary and secondary. If high voltage is supplied to the primary, then in case of a fault in the coil, the voltage of the secondary circuit is likely to be dangerous.
  2. Its reactance is low, due to which in case of short circuit a high current flows in the coil.
  3. When the transformation takes place at a much higher voltage than the primary, it is necessary that both the coils are electrically well insulated from each other. This is not possible in an auto transformer.

Applications of Auto Transformer-

  1. Auto transformers are used like regulating transformers. For example, for controlling the speed of fans.
  2. These are used as boosters to increase the voltage in alternating current feeders.
  3. It is used as a starter to run the induction motor.
  4. These are used for voltage control of power and lighting circuits.
