Potential transformer –
If you want to measure the potential of high voltage with a low range voltmeter, then it can be measured by installing a potential transformer. This is a step down transformer. These are made for low output and their secondary voltage is up to 150 volts. As per the figure, the secondary winding of PT is earthed. The scale of the voltmeter is divided to measure several thousand volts.
While using potential transformer, care should be taken that earthing terminals are provided on its body, frame or metal casing and they should be connected to a good earthing ELCB.
