Functions of forebay It is in the form of an enlarged canal and is just above the intake. Its main purpose is to temporarily collect water during low load and when the load increases, it supplies water for the initial increase in electrical load, so that the turbine does not feel the shortage of water even after the increase in electrical load. As long as the water level in the forebay decreases due to increase in load, water from the main reservoir reaches the canal with speed and the turbine keeps rotating at the right speed. If there is no forebay, then the turbine will feel the shortage of water when the electrical load increases because the main reservoir is not able to supply more amount of water at once during the increase in load because it takes some time for the valve to open, due to which there will be a dip in the speed of rotation of the turbine, due to which the electricity produced by the generator will not be of the right quality. Similarly, if the electric load suddenly reduces, the turbine will require less amount of water, due to which the remaining water will collect in the forebay. Before the level of the forebay reaches its highest capacity, the valves will close and the main reservoir will supply water according to the load on the turbine. If there was no forebay, then when the load suddenly reduces, the main reservoir would not be able to close its valves immediately, due to which water would hit the turbine with great velocity, which is called water hammer effect. Since the load on the turbine is high, the level of water in the forebay is low. When the load reduces suddenly, the turbine uses as much water as it needs and sends the remaining water to the forebay. That is, the forebay works like a regulating reservoir.
